Introduction to Implementation Science Theory and Design

An introduction to the different target audiences and approaches needed to apply research findings in real-world settings. The course is the gateway for scholars who plan for additional study within the field but also suffices as cross-exposure for scholars whose primary interest is in other fields (public health, epidemiology, etc). Trainees will apply concepts taught in the course by developing a protocol for implementing, adapting and/or evaluating a health intervention or program of their choice. See details

An introduction to the history, theory and practice of engaging patients, health care providers, communities and the public in health-related research. A variety of engagement strategies will be presented and trainees will consider their benefits and limitations for intervention design and implementation research. The course will foster critical thinking about the potential consequences of engagement efforts for individuals, communities and the production of new scientific knowledge.
Designing Individual-Level Implementation Strategies

This course provides in-depth exposure to developing or adapting individual-level strategies to facilitate uptake of health interventions. It introduces scholars to health behavior change theory and how to integrate behavior change theory into the design of implementation strategies. Trainees will apply concepts taught in the course to create theory-informed survey and qualitative data collection instruments, select specific techniques that address barriers to behavior change within their area of focus, and/or develop sections of intervention-focused grant proposals. Designing Interventions to Change Organizational Behavior

Instruction in translational tools at health care system level to promote the adoption of evidence-based medicine by the public and providers through mechanisms that influence health care delivery systems.
Program Evaluation in Clinical and Public Health Settings

Instruction in different types of program evaluation, including needs assessment, formative research, process evaluation, monitoring of outputs and outcomes and impact assessment; developing an evaluation plan and using systematically collected information about a program to understand whether and how the program is meeting its stated goals and objectives; improve program effectiveness; make decisions about future programming. Translating Evidence into Policy

Instruction in the policy process and strategies for collecting and disseminating research findings to inform and influence that process. The course will be taught through a series of lectures and interactive sessions during which trainees will have an opportunity to apply the strategies to their own work.
