UCSF Institutional Career Development Awards (K12)
CTSI KL2 Clinical Research Career Development Awards. Faculty Scholars are chosen each year to pursue clinical and translational research projects for 3-5 years with training and mentoring. The program includes a master's degree in clinical research for those who do not have such training, a supportive environment, modest financial resources, and access to core faculty who provide expertise and guidance in research design, measurement and questionnaire design, study coordination, data management, biostatistical analysis, and scientific writing.
Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) trains junior faculty to be successful, independent clinical and translational investigators in women's health.
Child Health Career Development Program trains researchers to harness advanced research strategies to address urgent problems (e.g., asthma, cancer, infectious diseases, host defense defects, diabetes, obesity, and developmental malformations of the heart, brain, and other organs), that will result in new treatments to improve child health outcomes.
IMPACT (IMplementation Science for Pulmonary And Cardiac Research Training) is a new K12 program at UCSF to train junior faculty in the science of improving the delivery of interventions proven to improve heart and lung health.
IRACDA Scholars in Science (ISIS) Program cultivates a diverse group of biomedical scientists to pursue independent research and teaching careeers and to enrich the collaborative relationship between UCSF and SFSU in research, training, and mentoring.
Multidisciplinary K12 Urologic Research (KURe) Career Development Program trains and supports junior faculty from diverse disciplines who are interested in pursuing careers in the study of benign urological diseases.
Neurological Sciences Academic Development Award (NSADA) in the UCSF Division of Pediatric Neurology gives junior child neurologists the research skills they need to identify better ways of caring for children with disorders of the nervous system. The overall theme is "Translating Discoveries in Neurological Diseases of Infancy and Childhood."
The UCSF-KPNC Urologic Epidemiology (UroEpi) K12 Career Development Program seeks to recruit and support junior faculty researchers from diverse disciplines who are committed to advancing understanding of the incidence, progression, risk factors, impact, and/or prevention and treatment of non-malignant urologic conditions.
Women's Reproductive Health Research (WRHR) Career Development Program offers a mentored, structured scholarship program of two years duration in basic or clinical research training for physicians who have completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The program includes course work, immersion into a vibrant academic research community, and "hands-on" research experience.

K01. The purpose of the Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) is to provide support and "protected time" (three, four, or five years) for an intensive, supervised career development experience in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences leading to research independence. K07. The Academic Career Award supports individuals interested in introducing or improving curricula in a particular scientific field as a means of enhancing the educational or research capacity at the grantee institution. Support for development activities (NIA, NIAAA, NCCAM, and ODS) is designed for more junior candidates who are interested in developing academic and research expertise. In addition, NCI's Cancer Prevention, Control, Behavioral, and Population Sciences Career Development Award provides support to individuals with health professional or science doctoral degrees who are not fully established investigators and who want to pursue research careers in the cancer prevention, control, population, and/or behavioral sciences. K08. The purpose of the Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award is to support the development of outstanding clinician research scientists. This mechanism provides specialized study for individuals with a health professional doctoral degree committed to a career in laboratory or field-based research. See current UCSF K08 awards
K23. The purpose of the Mentored Patient-Oriented Research (POR) Career Development Award is to support the career development of investigators who have made a commitment to focus their research endeavors on patient-oriented research. This mechanism provides support for three to five years of supervised study and research for clinically trained professionals who have the potential to develop into productive, clinical investigators focusing on patient-oriented research. NIH Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research. The NIH allows Principal Investigators holding specific types of NIH research grants to apply for funds for administrative supplements to improve the diversity of the research workforce by supporting and recruiting students, postdoctorates, and eligible investigators from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented.
Mid-Level Faculty Awards
K02. The Independent Scientist Award provides support for newly independent scientists who can demonstrate the need for a period of intensive research focus as a means of enhancing their research careers. This award is often used as a "bridge" grant between a mentored career award (K23) and a R01. See current UCSF K02 awards
K07. The Academic Career Award is used by the NIH Institutes and Centers to support individuals interested in introducing or improving curricula in a particular scientific field as a means of enhancing the educational or research capacity at the grantee institution. Support for leadership activities (NIA, NIAAA, NCCAM, and ODS) is designed for more senior individuals who are interested in improving the curricula and enhancing the research capacity within an academic institution. K22. The Career Transition Award is intended to facilitate the transition of investigators from the mentored to the independent stage of their careers by providing "protected time" for newly independent investigators to develop and receive support for their initial research programs. This award is often used as a "bridge" grant between a mentored career award (K23) and a R01. (No current UCSF K22 awards.)
K24. Midcareer Investigator Award In Patient-Oriented Research Development of clinical mentors conducting funded research. The purpose of the Midcareer Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented Research is to provide support for clinician investigators to allow them protected time to devote to patient-oriented research (POR) and to act as research mentors primarily for clinical residents, clinical fellows and/or junior clinical faculty. This award is primarily intended for clinician investigators who are at the Associate Professor level and who have an established record of independent, peer-reviewed Federal or private research grant funding in POR. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Physician Faculty Scholars Program supports junior faculty to enhance their skills and productivity through institutional and national mentoring, protected time, and research experience.
Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation) supports junior faculty from historically disadvantaged backgrounds to succeed in clinical, translational and basic science research.
Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Awards for Medical Scientists foster the development and productivity of established independent physician-scientists who will strengthen translational research through their own studies as well as by mentoring physician-scientist trainees.
UCSF Hellman Fellowshipship Program was designed to assist young faculty who show the capacity for great distinction in their field, and whose research area or career face special challenges at this critical point in their research career.
